this song has been in my head since the party on friday night….a house party that led to my ipod being plugged in and my halloween ‘09 playlist being utilized all night….are you guys surprised? am i surprised? i’m good friends with all of the residents if that makes any difference. just now though, i luckily discovered who this beat was by….i’ve been wondering ever since the melody occurred to me, around 24 hours ago. this song is short and simple but i like it a lot. it’s called anchor steam, and i don’t know why, but it’s fast and exhilarating and soulful and apparently more captivating than it might seem upon first listen. it’s beautiful in an uncommon way. i’m not sure that i would’ve been into a track like this more than a year or so ago, but i’m really grateful that my tastes have evolved like they have, especially in the most recent months. i’m not sure exactly how i would describe this track. upbeat lounge music possibly? it seems more aggressive than that though….some kind of ‘dance’ music for sure. pitchfork would call it a ‘banger’ because its an electronic track that sounds like parisian goldfish, but i don’t think that’s really saying too much. or maybe it is, because that’s the whole point…..but who the fuck are they to start telling people to drop the labels and embrace the passion in the music or whatever? i mean, get outta here. anyway, this song has a great kind of energy to it, and is very short, so it’s worth listening to if you have the time on your hands to read a verbose description like this….because it’s probably over if you clicked play when you started reading. if you don’t fit into any of these categories or qualifications or dichotomous statements, then do whatever the fuck you want, it doesn’t even matter really. find some other beats you like, just stimulate your own mind if me and teebs aren’t making it happen for you right now, haha.
this is why i want to write about music for a living, potentially…..because even now, as ‘out of my element’ as i’m going to get, i’m clearly inclined to attempt to articulately discuss it anyway, you know? [edit- i think i wrote this around 5 am, after like 8 hours of partying??] so its worth a shot. goodnight everyone.
very rhythmically and texturally stimulating, with plenty of energetic bounce. hypnotizingly insistent ascending lines and arpeggiations will do that….this track is featured within the massive collection of music released by ninja tune on the 20th anniversary of their founding, and showcases the british dj as one of the foremost 8-bit extraordinaires making music today.
