so starting tomorrow, im going to start posting reviews, pictures, and videos from my experiences in austin this past week for the music portion of south by southwest (hereafter referred to as sxsw). at some point in the near future, i’ll also be posting these on a new website that will keep the posts much more organized and easily accessible than tumblr can. for now, i’m just going to pick five pictures from between monday and this morning that best epitomize my trip.
[woke up with my hearing still screwed up from daedelus/glitch mob.] sat. - saw lean hounds, buckshot and tek (from smif-n-wessun/cocoa brovaz), black milk, a bunch of 14 year olds performing led zeppelin music (successfully), dosh (!), dj spider, dj craze, cut chemist, dj jazzy jeff, and mos def. i think that might be it, though im not sure what tomorrow will entail music-wise. maybe just relaxing in austin for a day before driving home. i’ll start writing up reviews and posting pictures/videos of all of these shows in a day or two.
fri - saw oh no ono again, tally hall, local natives, dr. dog, watched fsu lose in the ncaa tournament again over the course of a few hours, broken bells, antipop consortium, daedelus, and glitch mob. crazy, crazy day and night…..got home a little before 5. ears are still ringing.
thurs - saw oh no ono, kev brown/oddisee/diamond district (ft. j.rocc), dilated peoples (!!!), gangrene (alchemist + oh no, ft. dj babu), strong arm steady, rhymefest, 88-keys, jean grae, and talib kweli. thought talib was going to perform with hi-tek but apparently not. still a great show. fun day and all but i think i’ll try and step up the quantity tomorrow.
wednesday - saw yelawolf (rapper from alabama), sleepy sun (psychedelic blues rock from california), howlies (atlanta garage rock/doo-wop) j. rocc, peanut butter wolf, and madlib (stones throw records party; california hip-hop djs spinning only 45’s), and n-type (british dubstep, the loudest dubstep show i’ve ever been to by far). quality. it’s past 5 am though and i’m incredibly tired again, as has been the reoccuring theme lately. still worth it. again, reviews and more discussion to come later. oh, and i just heard the news, very sad; R.I.P. nujabes.
only spent an hour or so downtown tonight. didn’t see too much live music there as it approached 2 am, but i watched three bands earlier at the so-called “chamber pop” show at the moose lodge; hello lovers, mumblebee, and mother falcon, reviews/pictures/maybe videos to follow. secret BROKEN BELLS free show recently announced, wednesday @ 1pm by/in the parking garage across from stubbs. definitely going to use that chance to see them. hoping to be resourceful and catch both madlib and flying lotus tomorrow night, even though their shows might only be for people with wristbands/badges. tomorrow is not only the first day of the music portion of sxsw, but it’s also st. patrick’s day. intense.
been listening to “plastic beach” a lot the last two days…..this song in particular is fuckin outstanding. i love songs that blur (GET IT?!?! DAMON ALBARN JOKE) the line between inducing chills and dancing one’s self into a state of euphoria. the first half is beautiful, reminding me of a slightly less exotic version of "hong kong", a song for charity that albarn recorded a few years ago, and the enormously fulfilling beat in the second half sounds even more gigantic because of the subdued intro. it would probably be incredible blasting through some monstrous speakers, outdoors at midnight….aka i still wish i could go to coachella this summer and experience what i just described. but anyway, if you enjoy the track, check out the cd; even though no gorillaz cd could be encapsulated by a single song (there’s at least 5 genres represented on each of their albums), this song does a pretty good job of conveying what damon albarn is using his cartoon band to get across.
i dont think i’ve ever listened to “there there” by radiohead in my car and not air drummed on my steering wheel like a complete fool. if you’re ever driving around tallahassee and hear that song blasting from another vehicle, look around and try and say hello.
