The Roots - Quills (Live on BBC Radio One’s Worldwide Show with Gilles Peterson)
We get dramatic / there you have it / my batting average / a vault full of classics / assault is all classic / Thought, put ass backwards rappers in a small package / yo, experience is all that is cuz I’m well established / me and the mic in matrimony like a marriage / the technique in your reach / if only you can grab it / for me, it’s automatic / it’s natural, we that thorough / poet for hire, pack metal
-Supreme lyricist, Black Thought, flipping the LP lyrics to the Phrenology joint Quills on the fly ever so slightly, as The Roots crew all contribute their precisely tempered sounds to this live radio performance from 2002.
this extended performance of theirs is really a showcase for the talent of each of the individual members of the group. stuff like the scratch intro and outro often doesn’t wind up on record, but is the kind of unpredictable element found in live shows from the roots.
Trinary Motion - Mike Mainieri / Man Behind Bars (1995)
i’m tired of these goddamned idiots in boca raton always accelerating like assholes as soon as they get a green light at an intersection. fucking douchecopters in mediocre cars. like, it’s completely predictable at this point — i’m getting home around 4 am, and i’m next to someone at a red light, or behind them or something, and i’m just chilling listening to my music, not in too much of a hurry because (loud/good) music provides me with contentedness, and this fuckface just TAKES OFF because the light turned green. I DON’T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU CAN PUSH YOUR FOOT DOWN HARD WHEN A COLOR CHANGES. and no one else is impressed either, you generic shitburger. that is one thing i will not miss about south florida….fucking stupidly competitive, chauvenistic, shallow-minded, upper-middle class knuckleheads with gelled hair and shitty-ass attitudes. fucking GET REAL. NO WAY.
(this song is by mike mainieri and is kind of like elevator music, but with a really satisfying featured vibraphone. it’s one of my favorite instruments.)
now i’m going to go watch ‘drinking out of cups again.’ really looking forward to getting all these tommy noble’s and captain knots’s out of my life for good. 5-6-4-3, yeahhh right.

oh goddamnit this is just too fucking much, i laughed a good healthy amount of times while reading this. i don’t even know whether i should check out the song or not…..i’m thinking i shouldn’t. i’m thinking i should listen to some ghostface instead. i mean, fuckin a.
tasty beats of the disco fusion variety. he sort of took house music and did whatever he wanted with it. the first time i heard moritz friedrich, aka siriusmo’s music, was on this diverse electronica mix, where his track ‘mosaik' stood out as being my favorite on the whole (quality) compilation. i thought i had posted it separately, but tumblr is fucking retarded when it comes to searching through my own tags.
also, the medium itself to sample through his upcoming record, the player on the website, is really cool and futuristic, and a success from a design standpoint. check it out and see if you agree. looking forward to this one.
one of my favorite songs ever written. it’s a haunting but gentle 5/4 exploration, with sensitively phrased string arrangements by harry robinson (and robert kirby), and production by joe boyd. idyllic songs like this suggest a revival of the european impressionist aesthetic from half a century earlier, where evocative mood and tone were prioritized over literal symbolism and direct messages through music. his unorthodox chord structures are also particularly reminiscent of composers like debussy and ravel, so his mellow vocals and harmonic meanderings may represent more of an understated progressiveness than he would’ve attributed to his own artistic vision. that was sort of complex, sorry, i’m just speculating here, are you still with me? do give some extra consideration to these chords though, they’re really fantastic.
here’s a slideshow tribute to the enigmatic folk legend, who only exists now in photographs and audio recordings, after accidentally (?) overdosing on anti-depressants in 1974. he was largely unknown until the last decade or two, but has a devastatingly fascinating life story, and is now regarded as one of the most brilliant acoustic guitarists and singer-songwriters to have ever been recorded. surprisingly, and somewhat unfittingly, his popularity is largely traceable to this undeniably memorable VW cabrio commercial from 2000, which conveyed a ‘journey is the destination’ sort of message. his first album, 1969’s five leaves left, will stick with you forever if you give it the chance.
an hour and a half of mid-90’s hip-hop, presented by an all-time great who was on top of his (and everyone else’s) game. i originally found it here, as a promo clip for a sxsw show that i rsvp’ed for tonight, because i’ll fucking BE THERE, to see him (and washed out) perform live in a few weeks……holy shit.

this is what resounds in your brain at night, the sonic manifestation of the active dimethyltryptamine, when you fall asleep in your tent at 4 am at an electronic music festival, with five different kinds of music ambiently drifting in through the rain fly. star-crossed vectors fused by transcendent technological forces.
The Vatican reports cited countless cases of nuns forced to have sex with priests. Some were obliged to take the pill, others became pregnant and were encouraged to have abortions. In one case in which an African sister was forced to have an abortion, she died during the operation and her aggressor led the funeral mass.
i’m going to throw up
cool, i’m definitely down to reblog this — i would say something like ‘burn in hell’ but THERE IS NO SUCH THING YOU RIDICULOUS ORGANIZATION OF FUCKING LIARS
I feel like this track channels Wendy Carlos, especially around 1:50.
tasty complexities…..i’m hearing a sort of manic boards of canada influence here. shades of prefuse 73 too, but expressed in a different way. i wrote about the interesting backstory behind wendy carlos in this dilla post from a few weeks ago. the last section after the key change reminds me of jam band music, trance-jammers like perpetual groove and lotus in particular. ‘master and student' is a pretty stimulating and progressive track, but it has an element of nostalgia to it as well.
