and by that, i mean i re-synced up my lastfm with my itunes so i’m SCROBB-A-LING again. that sentence would’ve looked fucking ridiculous no more than 10 years ago. maybe it’ll automatically post my weekly listening like it used to, or maybe it won’t.
here’s my page, add me if you’re on there. i’ve definitely listened to a lot more than siriusmo since january….although i did go old school and put on some siriusmo last night on my way home from blazer tag.
just one more time now, to make sure you’re with me, the horse i was referring to was lastfm scrobbling. yeah.
The Couch Sessions Presents |A Tribute to Yukimi Nagano (Mixed by Supa Qool DJ Uncle Q)
Whenever There Is You — Koop Blues Alley — Ge-ology No Love — Little Dragon Mystic Qool Breeze — Quartermaine After The Rain — Little Dragon Feather — Little Dragon Pieces of You — Shuya Okino Forever — Little Dragon Summer Sun — Koop Thunder Love — Little Dragon Love You My Hope (Do Right Remix) — Hird The Music in Her Eyes — Swell Session I See A Different You — Koop Drawn 2 U — Jafrosax Never Never — Little Dragon
had no idea that yukimi was part of koop, how awesome. koop are a swedish duo (ahhh i should’ve known, that’s the connection right there) who specialize in chilled out electronica breaks, the sleepy side of acid jazz, and her speciality involves singing over beats exactly of that sort. also cool that she worked with ge-ology, one of his tracks is currently my ringtone actually. i see that her tracks with gorillaz were excluded, i suppose their superstar status doesn’t necessarily entail ‘empire ants' or 'to binge' being obligatory selections though, as beloved as those songs may be to some. this is some mellow stuff to enjoy on your night off, however that concept may present itself.
this bbc news article is about tropical storm debby and its impact on floridians. the thing i thought was funny was the picture of the state, with a bunch of cities labeled. miami is the southernmost of the cities. but why would they possibly choose those cities shown on the map?? mexico beach? cedar key? i went to school at fsu, something like an hour from where each of those places seem to be, but i haven’t heard of either. englewood, instead of tampa or orlando? there are around 4 million people living around tampa bay, and i just looked up englewood and there are 10,000. did they just pick arbitrary places?
if you’re not from florida this probably means nothing to you.
it’s at blazer tag, the same place neon indian threw their afterparty a few months ago after their show at the moment. it unfortunately sold out really quickly, so i still haven’t been there yet. until tonight.
there are free kegs of beer free bottles of liquor two dj’s (irresponsible voltron) plus a live band (bipolar bears) free fucking lazer tag
it’s from midnight to 6am, and is totally fucking free. presented by TRIFEKTA, it’s called ‘lazer lights and neon tits.’ and it’s starting like, right now.
ambient tune from a producer who’s apparently only 15 years old, a kid from england who now lives in florence, italy. i feel like it’s extraordinary that with the current over-saturation of stimulating media that exists right now, someone of his age can have the refined headspace to create something this peaceful. someone on soundcloud made a post on my unedited organ recording ‘some cheeeeese and shiggerettes' recommending it, and i wound up extremely impressed. here’s a free ep of his, really rich in tones and feeling, with jonwayne, shlohmo, and groundislava (who i’ll be seeing tomorrow) as listed influences.
The CEO of the celebrated U.S. hygiene products company Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps was arrested outside of the White House on Monday protesting the U.S. ban on industrial hemp farming. David Bronner locked himself inside a steel cage along with several hemp plants that he harvested for oil.
David Bronner: “We spend over $100,000 a year buying hemp seed oil from Canadians, from Canadian farmers. We’ve been trying over 10 years to be able to grow and purchase hemp seed oil from American farmers, and we’re just getting really frustrated with Obama, who as a state senator from Illinois voted twice for industrial hemp cultivation, but as a president has ignored us completely. This is not a drug. This is like a poppy seed bagel. You know the poppy seed comes from the bread seed poppy, a non-drug cultivar of the opium poppy. It’s the same thing with industrial hemp. The rest of the world is moving on — Canada, China, Europe — and American farmers are just cut out.”
Bronner was detained after several hours inside the cage when police broke open the lock.
this is my list of shows i attended over the last two weekends. truly special ones are bolded.
got there around 2am on wednesday night/thursday morning, and waited in line until around 6am. unfolded our stuff and napped. we eventually moved our tent from general riverside camping, which was around 30 minutes from the stages including the free schoolbus shuttle up the mountain, to 25 feet from the river, which was around a 45 minute trip away. swimming first thing in the morning was AMAZING but the musical inconveniences kinda sucked.
- thursday -
lyrics born, phutureprimitive, rubblebucket, lance herbstrong, govinda, pretty lights, martyparty, papadosio, nit grit, vibesquad. holy shit vibesquad. 5am to 7am never felt so good.
- friday -
rubblebucket, soulive, lettuce, soulive + lettuce (the royal family ball), the motet, wick-it the instigator, break science, a bit of edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros, balkan beat box, r/d, ghostland observatory, michal menert (5am to 6:30 feeling pretty damn good once again), clandestine
- saturday -
tinariwen, gramatik, virtual boy, umphrey’s mcgee for a bit, primus, quixotic, big gigantic, beats antique for a bit, and then i was walking over to opiuo/rjd2/maybe paper diamond/nobody beats the drum//nadis warriors, when a storm rolled in and they cancelled the rest of the night of music. was ready to rage it too…all those artists were performing within a span of 4ish hours. too bad. my friends went out a few times to check if anything was going on once the brief rain ended, but it was a no go. i passed out in a lawn chair under my friend’s canopy by main event camping, and eventually in a tent over there.
- sunday -
toubab krewe, tinariwen, iration, the heavy pets, soja, slightly stoopid (way better than i was expecting), la riots, eoto, the floozies. a really good day with some new and old friends. the storm after the floozies fantastic closing set was INSANE. pretty much never seen anything like that before, and i grew up where hurricane season was relevant every year. slept in a van that was painted like a cow with around ten other people.
top five of the weekend: vibesquad, michal menert, soulive + lettuce, toubab krewe (always a lock in my list of favorites), and……the floozies. tough call over eoto, primus, virtual boy, and tinariwen, but i gave them the nod because i was entirely unfamiliar with them beforehand. didn’t think anything was about to top eoto. they threw down.
we got there around noon on thursday and there was NO LINE, to my amazement. we were around a 15 minute walk from the event but there was usually long lines to actually get in, which was usually pretty annoying. packed drinks for the wait and made a few friends in the process. successfully navigated the weekend’s obnoxious TSA-style patdowns. they were confiscating GLOWSTICKS from people. wut?
- thursday -
rubblebucket, the casey driessen singularity, mariachi el bronx, waited in line for a longass time to watch the heat/celtics game 6 in the cinema tent, finally watched it in the cinema tent (lebron went for 45/15/5…wtf??), phantogram, big gigantic for a bit (sound was way worse than waka and i couldn’t bear it), mimosa
- friday -
tune-yards, two door cinema club,a bit of sharon jones & the dap-kings, afrocubism, fitz and the tantrums, feist, a bit of ludacris, a bit of oberhofer, a bit of st. vincent, rodrigo y gabriela ft. c.u.b.a., RADIOHEAD, the word (john medeski, robert randolph, and the north mississippi all-stars), black star, flying lotus, a bit of dumpstaphunk, umphrey’s mcgee, big gigantic’s surprise 4am set break during umphreys, and then another hour or two of umphrey’s
- saturday -
battles, sbtrkt, gary clark jr. (small stage), heat/celtics game 7, the roots during the 2nd quarter, the rest of heat/celtics game 7 (FUCK YEAH), a bit of red hot chili peppers, a nap with rhcp playing in the distance, spectrum road, ?uestlove’s superjam featuring surprise guest d’angelo (i was probably one of the 5% of people there who was pretty sure it was him on stage….it was his first american performance in TWELVE YEARS), gza performing liquid swords featuring grupo fantasma. oh my god that was amazing, i wish i could relive that. randomly met a new friend, a girl from tallahassee, during spectrum road, and we watched the rest of the night’s music together. that was a nice touch.
- sunday -
gary clark jr. (main stage…WHOA), here we go magic, the beach boys, war on drugs, here we go magic (encore on a smaller stage), ben folds five, and bon iver, the shins, and phish all from a distance. hearing recognizable singles from bon iver and the shins simultaneously from afar was really fascinating. kinda lost some momentum towards the end because we left bonnaroo at 10pm, during phish.
top five of the weekend: radiohead, gza ft. grupo fantasma, gary clark jr., black star, and battles. the superjam, flylo, and here we go magic barely missed the cut.
so that was that. pictures and videos to follow soon, i promise.
well, i guess i'll be watching game 6 on thursday night at bonnaroo.
….elimination game for miami. damn. was hoping the heat would win so i wouldn’t have to worry about it, and then could watch the nba finals once i get home. now, who knows if they’ll make it past this weekend.
so wakarusa was fucking regoddamndiculous. what an amazing weekend filled with fantastic music and even more incredible people, including bunch of fabulous austinites. lots of people from colorado. it was lovely all the way through…discovered a bunch of great new artists, saw a bunch i’d been waiting to see for years, and thoroughly enjoyed some old classics. oh and we found carl, finally….he was sitting in a big garbage bin with a rain storm approaching, asking for spare change that anyone could spare for some down and out white trash.
lost my phone in a tennessee gas station afterwards. after all that, after the hailstorm, the storm of the century as soon as the last show of the weekend finished, after all sorts of crazy situations where my life was scattered all over arkansas, i lost my phone at a GAS STATION. oh well. getting another one sent to me tomorrow, though i won’t have any of my old numbers, other than the relevant-to-this-trip ones i wrote down in advance.
staying in nashville for two more days, and then heading down to bonnaroo. currently baking batch #2 of caramels and hoping that it’s finished before this heat game i’m going to wander over to a bar to go watch. can’t believe how much shit i’d queued up before leaving town….been even busier on this site than i am when i’m around computers. pretty great trip so far, hope you guys are all doing your thing and doing it well.
