the understated title does sum it up pretty well — this soundcloud set is a collection of classic beats and breaks, a concept reeking of old vinyl and ideal for beat collectors and loop diggers. there’s a good amount of variety here; beyond repossessed drum loops from funk albums, you’ll find several examples of ‘90’s-style DnB and jungle breaks, brief glimpses of dubstep textures, and plenty of vocal samples and scratches to keep things from getting too mechanical. my favorite track is the perfectly-titled #10, ‘cold krushin brooklyn beats,’ which features some timeless staccato chops, enough ‘80’s hip-hop effects to fill an entire album, and ominous synth melodies and fierce cuts that bring back memories of those late-night radio beats with titles you never wind up hearing the dj announce. it’s a barren and cold track, but funky like the guy laying low towards the back in shades and a full tracksuit, scanning the crowd with unknown motives. it’ll sound familiar even though it surely isn’t. if tracks were animals, that one would be a tarantula. b-boys and b-girls, and those who appreciate them, should check this long island retrospective opus immediately.
