the new deal - i feel love

in honor of disco queen donna summer, who died today of cancer in florida, here’s a fantastic cover of her 1977 hit ‘i feel love,’ recorded by torontonian jamtronica trio the new deal. i would actually recommend listening to this ‘intro’ first, which precedes it as the beginning of their gone gone gone album and leads into the track brilliantly, in addition to being a standout jam in its own right. actually, i prefer the intro myself, a tune that very few electronic or other kinds of groups are capable of pulling off, with mellow pacing, relatively simple but extremely effective vocal harmonies (especially the first chord, at 1:29, with its striking use of the 9th as a leading tone halfway through), a melodica theme that eventually shows up sporadically throughout the entire album, and deliberate use of glitch back then in 2003, before it blew up as a genre upon itself. truly an uncategorizable piece of music within the very broad range of electronica fusion, one that warrants additional listens, a prelude to a story that entails you delaying your inclinations to move forward to the rest of the album, causing you to instead just sit contentedly at the starting line clicking repeat. like road tripping to a music festival and spending the first two days at your tent, so immersed in the experience there that you don’t even feel like you’re missing out by not exploring the rest of what’s readily available. mmmmm….’intro.’ strangely enough, it was featured in a scene from csi las vegas, according to my youtube sources. weird. but uhhhh do go ahead and listen to ‘i feel love’ though, because donna summer wrote that song and this post is a dedication to her….right? maybe?

fuck, i miss the new deal. RIP guys. i’ll be sure to make it over to your reunion show in ten years.

edit - hahah just realized i forgot to post the link to her original. i suppose my musical priorities are pretty evident at this point. oh well. here ya go.
