jurassic 5 - what’s golden & a day at the races (live @ summer sonic 2004, tokyo, japan)
an all-time favorite group, who i desperately wish i could’ve seen in their prime. i’ve caught chali 2na live twice (once with toubab krewe….!!!!!!!), and cut chemist once, at sxsw ‘10 for his red bull music academy showcase, which was truly an unbelievable show. he was between dj jazzy jeff and mos def. jurassic 5 changed my perspective on hip-hop forever, once i caught the ‘quality control' video on mtv once morning while getting ready for middle school. i still remember almost all of the words. if you're unfamiliar with the group, or halfheartedly dismiss them as just another product of the late '90's-early 2000's hip-hop scene, now's as good of a time as ever to reconsider how truly groundbreaking and progressive they were, as a live turntablism/production/emcee ensemble. lyrically they were on point like no other, and in terms of dj'ing, cut chemist and dj nu mark blended sampling and beat making to an extent that an unprecedented atmosphere of collaborative brilliance was definitively achieved. i don't think anyone else will ever compare to the collective excellence, the hybridization of roots and innovation, that these hip-hop legends pulled off.
