wait, there’s an artist out there who decided to name their musical endeavors after shawn kemp? my mind is sort of blown right now. i do like the tune, it’s an minimal beat ideal for late night situations, but that’s just too much.

me and a friend tramaine (aka sk the greatest) won an nba jam arcade tournament downtown a few weeks ago (against squads consisting of the best producers in austin), and we named our team ‘the shawn kemp experience.’ this doesn’t exactly sound like appropriate theme music…..i don’t know, give me a little while guys, i need time to wrap my head around this.

for now, here’s a picture of the real shawn kemp getting into it with skeletal-looking dennis rodman back in 1996.

track’s alright, beat’s pretty good (but not alchemist’s best)…i’m mostly reblogging though because it was shot in austin. clearly during sxsw, based on the daytime foot traffic. this dude filmed his music video on the back of a pedicab, which i don’t remember ever seeing done before. pedicabbing is super relevant around these parts, i’ll just say that.

sun ra is rumored to have been born on this day (may 22nd) in 1914. he suggested that everyone do something they had perceived to be impossible, or to at least challenge one’s conventions, on this particular day. there’s even a facebook group for it.

this is off his rock konducta super-limited edition 45, only available at his upcoming early june show in san francisco. damn you california. it’s based off zambian rock music from the 70’s, and he’s bringing an O.G. from the era all the way from southern africa to perform with him. apparently he and yasiin bey/mos def are discussing a trip to zambia to collaborate on an album there(!!!!!!!), and a follow-up album to this exclusive promo opportunity. read more about the project here, (take note of the hilarious comparison between zambia’s geographic boundaries and the wu tang symbol), and enjoy this funky retro jam in the meantime. definite sock hop material, from the 7-inch packaging, to the groove that provides a strong evocation to shimmy around your room.

i’ll be joining michael garfield on clarinet during his set tonight @ stubbs indoor here in austin! pretty thrilled. not only is it one of the three most relevant venues in the whole city (particularly the outdoor part of the venue though, where i’ve seen tame impala, zappa plays zappa, mutemath, lotus, and more), but i blogged about michael’s art before i moved here, and before i ever met him. now we’re friends and collaborate on music often. things are funny sometimes.

whatever they just played a moment ago was my favorite thing i’ve heard so far. it gave me chills a bunch of times, some sort of instrumental post-rock track with organs and occasional electronics added to the mix. go scope out this performance immediately.

his new album, cold spring fault less youth, is streaming for free this week on NPR as well. really enjoyed the listen last night.

instrumental afro-soul jam courtesy of a horn-packed outfit from nyc. daptone records have a wide variety of all-stars on their roster, and these guys are one of my favorite acts among them, up there with the not-quite-as-exotic, but equally funky counterparts, the menahan street band. this groove was apparently featured in a commercial for the nfl network, strange. guess they did go ahead and use ratatat in a different recent commercial though. this one will stick with you.
